Sundarban Self-Plan vs Package from Kolkata: Permits, Boats, Costs and Family Booking Guide
Compare arranging a Sundarban trip yourself with booking a conducted package, including permits, registered boats, Canning–Sonakhali transfers, costs and family comfort.

The short answer: Self-planning can give experienced travellers more control, but a conducted package is usually simpler for first-time families because the operator coordinates the Kolkata–Canning–Sonakhali route, tourist boat, forest arrangements, accommodation and meals. Self-planning is not simply a matter of reaching Sonakhali and finding a boat.
Before choosing either option, understand what must be arranged legally and what the quote actually includes. The right comparison is not only self-plan versus package price; it is who will coordinate each part of the trip, and what happens if one connection fails?
What does a Sundarban trip require?
For the route used by Sundarban Yatri, the journey has three connected sections:
| Section | What must be arranged |
|---|---|
| Kolkata to Canning | Sealdah-to-Canning train or a confirmed car/taxi |
| Canning to Sonakhali | Car or auto, meeting point and timing |
| Sonakhali to the Sundarbans | Pre-booked tourist boat, applicable permissions and the planned route |
Read the existing Kolkata to Sundarbans route guide first. It explains why Canning-to-Sonakhali is a separate transfer and why arriving at Sonakhali without a confirmed boat may not get you into the Sundarbans on the same day.
What does independent travel really mean?
Independent travel does not mean travelling into the reserve without permissions or using any boat you find. You still need to coordinate the local transport, an approved or registered tourist boat, applicable forest permissions and charges, a guide arrangement where required, accommodation, meals and your return journey.
The Sundarban Tiger Reserve boat-booking guidance says that permission involves applicable entry, boat, camera and miscellaneous charges. The official Department of Sundarban Affairs guidance also advises visitors to carry a valid permit, follow protected-area rules and remain within permitted areas.
Independent travel can work if you are comfortable checking official information, making several separate arrangements and accepting that a delayed train or vehicle may affect the boat plan. It is not automatically cheaper.
Self-plan versus conducted package
| Decision point | Self-planned trip | Conducted package |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | You arrange Kolkata to Canning and Canning to Sonakhali separately. | The operator may coordinate the full local transfer; confirm the starting point. |
| Boat | You must verify the boat, booking and route yourself. | The operator normally arranges the tourist boat; ask for the boat and route details. |
| Permissions | You check the official process and applicable charges. | Ask exactly which permissions and charges are included. |
| Accommodation | You select and pay for the stay separately. | The package may include a room; confirm property, room type and nights. |
| Meals | You arrange food or select it at the stay. | Confirm which meals, drinking water and special food are included. |
| Delays | You solve missed connections yourself. | You have one operator contact, but written delay terms are still important. |
| Flexibility | More control over timing and comfort. | Less flexibility but easier coordination. |
When is self-planning suitable?
Self-planning may suit you when:
- You have travelled in the Sundarbans before.
- You can coordinate the Sealdah-to-Canning or Kolkata-to-Canning leg.
- You have verified the Canning-to-Sonakhali car or auto transfer.
- You know how you will arrange a registered tourist boat and permissions.
- Your travel dates are flexible if a boat or weather issue changes the plan.
- You are comfortable comparing separate quotes for transport, boat, stay and meals.
Even then, keep written confirmation of the boat, meeting point, permissions and return plan. A low-cost arrangement is not useful if one missing transfer leaves your family waiting at Sonakhali.
When is a package better for a family?
A conducted package is often more convenient for:
- First-time Sundarban visitors.
- Families with children or older travellers.
- Travellers carrying several bags.
- People with limited holiday time.
- Visitors who do not want to coordinate several local vehicles.
- Travellers who want one contact for the itinerary and travel-day updates.
A package is not automatically trustworthy just because it is a package. You must still ask for the route, boat, inclusions and cancellation terms in writing.

How much can self-planning cost?
Build your self-planned budget using the same sections used in the existing Sundarban tour cost guide:
| Cost section | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Kolkata to Canning | Train fare or car/taxi, tolls, parking and late-arrival cost |
| Canning to Sonakhali | Car or auto fare, luggage and meeting point |
| Tourist boat | Shared or private, boat capacity, route and operating period |
| Official charges | Entry, boat, guide, camera and miscellaneous charges |
| Accommodation | Room type, number of nights, taxes and cancellation policy |
| Meals | Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinking water and special food |
| Contingency | Extra vehicle time, medicines, personal purchases and delay costs |
For a package, ask whether the quote starts from Kolkata, Canning or Sonakhali. A Sonakhali-based price cannot be compared fairly with a Kolkata-to-Kolkata package until you add the missing road transfers and return journey.
Do not assume that self-planning is cheaper. A package can spread the cost of a shared vehicle and boat across travellers, while a small independent group may pay more for separate transport and a private arrangement.
How should you check the boat and permit arrangement?
- Ask whether the tourist boat is registered or approved for the planned route.
- Ask who is arranging the applicable forest permission and charges.
- Confirm whether the guide arrangement is included.
- Ask for the boarding location and exact Sonakhali meeting point.
- Confirm the boat sharing arrangement, passenger capacity and planned route.
- Ask whether the boat has the facilities your family needs, including seating, toilet and drinking-water arrangements.
- Ask what happens if weather, tide or a forest restriction changes the route.
- Keep the booking confirmation and operator contact with you during the trip.
The official reserve guidance explains that tourist entry is through booked registered boats and that the reserve is travelled by boat or launch. Treat a promise of a “boat on arrival” or an unitemised cash demand as a reason to ask more questions.
Family comfort: shared or private arrangements?
A shared boat or vehicle may reduce the per-person cost, but ask how many passengers will travel, whether the group has a quiet-travel policy and how much space is available. A private arrangement generally gives more control over timing and group comfort but may cost more.
For children and older travellers, ask about:
- Safe seating and life-jacket availability.
- Toilet access during the boat journey and at the accommodation.
- Drinking water and meal timing.
- Motion sickness and access to personal medicines.
- Shade, heat and rain protection.
- How the operator handles a delayed train or car.
- Emergency contact and return arrangements.
The existing Sundarban safari guide explains that this is a boat-based wildlife experience, not a jeep safari. Watchtower visits depend on the itinerary, permissions, weather and current operating conditions, and a tiger sighting is never guaranteed.
Booking red flags
- A price is advertised without saying whether it starts at Kolkata, Canning or Sonakhali.
- The operator cannot explain the Canning-to-Sonakhali transfer.
- The boat or permit arrangement is described only as “guaranteed” without details.
- There is no written list of inclusions and exclusions.
- The operator promises a guaranteed tiger sighting.
- The quote has no cancellation or weather/tide disruption terms.
- The operator pressures you to pay before confirming the meeting point and route.
- A shared boat arrangement does not explain passenger numbers or facilities.
Independent checklist before leaving Kolkata
If you choose to self-plan, confirm all of these before travelling:
- Sealdah-to-Canning train or Kolkata-to-Canning car plan.
- Canning-to-Sonakhali car or auto and driver details.
- Exact Sonakhali meeting point.
- Registered tourist boat confirmation.
- Permit and official-charge process.
- Guide arrangement.
- Accommodation and meal booking.
- Return plan from Sonakhali to Kolkata.
- Weather, tide and route-change contingency.
- Emergency phone numbers, cash and personal medicines.
Which option should you choose?
Choose self-planning if you want flexibility and are ready to coordinate every part of the route. Choose a conducted package if your priority is simpler planning, family comfort and one coordinated travel chain.
For most first-time families, the best value is not necessarily the lowest headline price. It is a written, realistic Kolkata-to-Sonakhali-to-boat plan with clear inclusions, a confirmed operator contact and no exaggerated wildlife promise.
For more guidance, visit the Sundarban Tour Cost topic hub, compare the Sundarban tour options, and review the route and safari articles before booking.
Call or WhatsApp Sundarban Yatri before booking with your travel date, number of travellers and preferred comfort level. Ask for a written quote showing the Canning-to-Sonakhali transfer, tourist boat, permissions, accommodation, meals and return plan.
Freshness note: Permit rules, forest charges, boat availability, package inclusions and prices can change. Verify the current official guidance and written operator quote before paying or travelling.
