How to Reach the Indian Sundarbans from Anywhere in India: Flights, Trains, Routes and Costs

Plan an Indian Sundarban trip from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or any city by connecting to Kolkata, then Canning, Sonakhali and a pre-booked tourist boat.

For many travellers, the journey to the Sundarbans begins by rail or road before continuing towards the rivers and waterways of the mangrove region.

The short answer: Travellers from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune or any other Indian city can usually plan the Indian Sundarbans in stages: reach Kolkata by flight or train, continue to Canning, travel from Canning to Sonakhali by car or auto, and enter the Sundarbans by a pre-booked tourist boat. The road and boat arrangements must be confirmed before you leave your home city.

This guide explains the journey from the national traveller’s point of view. It separates the intercity journey from the local route so you can plan realistic arrival buffers, costs and return connections.

Which Sundarbans does this guide cover?

This guide covers the Indian Sundarbans in West Bengal, not a Bangladesh-side tour. The Indian Sundarbans are a protected mangrove and wildlife region where visitors travel through waterways by an authorised tourist boat. The Sundarban Tiger Reserve access guidance says tourists enter the reserve only in booked, registered boats and that boats or launches are the way to travel inside the forest.

Do not treat the Sundarbans as a normal road destination where you can arrive and look for a ride at the last minute. Your intercity ticket, local transfer and tourist boat should fit together as one travel plan.

What is the route from another Indian city?

StageWhat to arrange
Your city to KolkataFlight or long-distance train with enough arrival buffer
Kolkata to CanningSealdah-to-Canning train or a confirmed car arrangement
Canning to SonakhaliPre-arranged car or auto and a clear meeting point
Sonakhali to the SundarbansPre-booked registered tourist boat, permissions and tour plan
Return journeyBoat, road transfer and a safe connection back to Kolkata

The existing Kolkata to Sundarbans route guide explains the Canning–Sonakhali section in more detail. Read it before fixing your train or flight return.

How should you reach Kolkata?

Travellers from outside West Bengal normally begin with one of two choices:

  • Flight: Fly to Kolkata and allow time for baggage collection, airport exit, road traffic and the onward route. Do not schedule a same-morning boat connection immediately after landing.
  • Train: Take a long-distance train to Kolkata and plan an overnight stay or a generous buffer if your Canning transfer is early. A late-running train can affect the entire boat plan.

The nearest major city identified in the official reserve guidance is Kolkata, and the nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Airfares and railway schedules change, so check the current airline or railway booking system for your travel date rather than relying on an old timetable in a blog post.

How do you travel from Kolkata to Canning?

From Kolkata, the public-transport route is to start at Sealdah and travel towards Canning. The official reserve guidance identifies Canning Railway Station as the nearest railhead and says EMU trains from Sealdah are available at regular intervals. Check the current service, platform, operating status and travel time before leaving.

You can also travel from Kolkata to Canning by private car, hired car or taxi. This may be easier for families, older travellers, groups with luggage or travellers connecting to a fixed boat departure. Confirm whether your operator is arranging the car or whether you must arrange it yourself.

How do you travel from Canning to Sonakhali?

Canning is not the end of the journey. After reaching Canning, continue to Sonakhali by car or auto according to your confirmed tour instructions. Ask for the exact meeting point, driver details, expected arrival time and what happens if your train reaches Canning late.

For a national traveller, this local transfer is important because you may not know the area and may be carrying luggage for several days. A written transfer plan is safer than assuming a vehicle will be available immediately outside the station.

How do you enter the Sundarbans from Sonakhali?

From Sonakhali, continue by the pre-booked tourist boat arranged by your trusted tour operator. Confirm the boat before travelling from Kolkata or from your home city. The operator should explain the route, permissions, guide arrangement, boarding time and return plan.

The official boat-booking guidance states that entry involves applicable entry, boat, camera and other charges and that conducted tours are commonly organised by private operators and West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. Ask which charges are included in your package.

Can you book everything after arriving?

Do not depend on a last-minute booking. If you reach Sonakhali without a confirmed tour, you may not get a tourist boat into the Sundarbans on the same day. Boats, forest permissions, accommodation and transfers may already be arranged for other travellers.

Before leaving your city, confirm:

  • Your Kolkata arrival and departure plan.
  • The Sealdah-to-Canning train or Kolkata-to-Canning car plan.
  • The Canning-to-Sonakhali car or auto transfer.
  • The Sonakhali meeting point and contact person.
  • The registered tourist boat and planned route.
  • Accommodation and meals, if your trip is overnight.
  • What happens if a flight, train, road transfer, tide or weather issue causes a delay.

How many days should travellers plan?

PlanBest forImportant consideration
1 night/2 daysTravellers with limited leaveKeep the Kolkata arrival and return connection flexible because the local road-and-boat journey takes time.
2 nights/3 daysMost first-time families and groupsAllows a more comfortable boat plan and reduces the pressure of returning immediately after the safari.
Longer tripTravellers combining wildlife, village experiences or Kolkata sightseeingConfirm the additional accommodation, meals and route instead of assuming every extra day means the same safari.

Do not count only the nights inside the Sundarbans. Include your travel from your home city to Kolkata, the Kolkata-to-Canning transfer, Canning-to-Sonakhali road journey, boat boarding and return to Kolkata.

What does the trip cost?

A national traveller’s total cost has several layers:

Cost layerWhat changes the amount
Home city to KolkataFlight or train, travel date, booking time and baggage
Kolkata to CanningSealdah train, private car, taxi, parking and tolls
Canning to SonakhaliCar or auto, group size and transfer arrangement
Tourist boatShared or private boat, route, duration and guide arrangement
Official chargesApplicable entry, boat, camera, guide and other fees
Stay and foodRoom type, number of nights, meals and special dietary needs

As a dated official benchmark, the IRCTC Tourism Sundarbans package page displayed a comfort tariff of ₹11,950 per person on double sharing, ₹11,650 on triple sharing and ₹7,850 for a child with bed for its stated 1 May 2026 to 31 March 2027 operating period. It also listed different operating days by season and a minimum group condition for other days. This is one official package benchmark, not a universal price for every route or operator.

Use the Sundarban tour cost guide to compare inclusions. For your own quote, ask whether the price includes your home-city travel, Kolkata transfer, Canning-to-Sonakhali transfer, boat, official charges, rooms, meals and return journey.

Self-planned trip or conducted package?

A self-planned trip may suit experienced travellers who can coordinate train or flight delays, local vehicles, accommodation, permits and boat arrangements. It requires more responsibility at each interchange.

A conducted package may be simpler for first-time travellers, families and groups coming from outside West Bengal because one operator can coordinate the local transfer, tourist boat, stay and meals. Do not choose only by the lowest starting price. Ask whether the quote begins in Kolkata, Canning or Sonakhali and whether the route is shared or private.

What should you verify before paying?

  1. Confirm that the tour uses a registered tourist boat.
  2. Ask for the exact Sonakhali meeting point.
  3. Confirm the Canning-to-Sonakhali vehicle or auto arrangement.
  4. Ask which official permissions and charges are included.
  5. Confirm whether the boat, guide, meals and accommodation are included.
  6. Ask whether the quoted amount is per person, room, vehicle or group.
  7. Get the cancellation and weather or tide disruption terms in writing.
  8. Confirm the emergency contact for the travel day.
  9. Allow a buffer before booking a return flight or long-distance train from Kolkata.

What should travellers pack?

Carry light luggage because the trip includes road and boat transfers. Pack personal medicines, comfortable clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, comfortable footwear, a small waterproof pouch for documents and phones, and any items your operator does not supply.

Ask about drinking water, meals, bedding, towels, charging and toiletries before you leave. Follow current forest rules about plastic, food and waste rather than relying on an old packing list.

Common mistakes for travellers from outside West Bengal

  • Booking a flight to Kolkata without allowing road and boat connection time.
  • Assuming Canning is inside the Sundarbans.
  • Arriving at Canning without a confirmed Sonakhali transfer.
  • Reaching Sonakhali without a pre-booked tourist boat.
  • Comparing a Canning-based price with a Kolkata-to-Kolkata package.
  • Using old train times, prices or forest rules.
  • Booking a tight return flight immediately after the expected boat arrival.
  • Expecting a guaranteed tiger sighting.

Plan from your city, but book the local route as one chain

For travellers anywhere in India, the most reliable planning method is to connect the whole journey before departure: your home city to Kolkata, Kolkata to Canning, Canning to Sonakhali and Sonakhali to the Sundarbans by tourist boat. Confirm the return chain as carefully as the outward route.
